Responsibilities of Players

  1. This is a friendly, social league and courtesy, respect and good sportsmanship are always expected, including allowing your opponents to roll their balls without distraction.
  2. Obtain a copy of the match play schedule. Advise your team captain at least a week in advance of any dates you will not be able to play and ASAP if an emergency occurs.
  3. Arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before your scheduled match to ensure your match starts on time.
  4. Support your captain as the singular voice of the team on all match related issues including any concerns about the play of your opponents.
  5. Stay focused on the match and be ready to play when it is your turn.
  6. Share any concerns regarding league play with your Captain. Your opinions are important, and you should feel free to share them.  If you are uncomfortable sharing concerns with your captain, contact any CCBC board member.
  7. Players are to respect the role of the Paddler to decide which team is in. A player may ask his or her captain to review the decision but may not criticize the paddler.
  8. Court Presence:
    • During play, only one participating player at a time is to be on the court while the game is in progress unless assistance is required.
    • Players may not cross the foul line. They must walk off the court to examine the position of thrown balls.
    • During a measurement, only one player from each team (the captain or their designee) is allowed on the court: all other players must stay outside the court.
    • Players are to wait to enter the court to pick up balls until after the measurement is completed and decision announced, and not offer opinions as to what the call should be.
Responsibilities of Captains

  1. Captains represent their team and the club and are responsible for the actions of their players.
  2. Captains are responsible for having a working knowledge of league rules and ethically enforcing them while providing their team members with an enjoyable bocce experience. This includes promoting good sportsmanship and doing their best to ensure a fair distribution of opportunities for play among team members both during a match and over the course of the season.
  3. The Club encourages new membership, and it is the responsibility of captains to provide guidance and instruction to members of their team who are new to the Club.
  4. Captains shall make every effort to play a match at the time and date scheduled.
    a. If either team is unable to field four players for a match, as long as the Captains agree in the spirit of sportsmanship to avoid forfeiture, the match must be rescheduled within three weeks of the originally scheduled date and on the same court as originally scheduled.
  5.  Captains shall not discourage members from attending a match for any reason.
  6.  If a captain is unable to attend a match, the captain must assign an acting captain to represent the team. It is the captain’s responsibility to ensure the acting captain has read and understands the League Rules and the Captain’s Responsibilities.
  7. Captains will meet to agree on paddlers before the start of the match.
  8.  At the end of the match, the two captains will be asked to electronically notify the CCBC Operations Director of the scores before leaving the court. If the completed match is one that had been rescheduled from an earlier date, the score must reflect both the originally scheduled date and the date of actual play
  9. The captains for the last match on each court for that day are responsible for returning equipment to the proper storage area. Should the last match of the day be canceled, Captains for the canceled match are responsible for reporting that cancellation to the captains of the preceding  match.
Responsibilities of the Paddler

  1. The role of the Paddler is assigned to a member of either team or someone else
with agreement of the two captains. The Paddler initially determines which
team’s bocce ball is closest to the pallino (“inside”) and so indicates by displaying
the side of the paddle matching the color of the “outside” team to the players at
the active end of the court. When the team that is “outside” has thrown all their
balls, the paddler will continue to show the color that is “outside” but will verbally
acknowledge that the “inside” team now throws.
  2. If the Paddler cannot clearly decide which color ball is inside, or if either captain
disagrees with the Paddler’s call, play is stopped and the 2 captains (or their
designees) jointly make the call, measuring if necessary.
If the ball that is thrown is judged to be of equal distance from the pallino as the
ball that was inside (a “tie”), the team that threw the last bocce ball continues to
    throw to break the tie.
  3. If the team cannot break the tie (throws all the remaining balls), the team that
originally was inside can throw the remainder of their balls, if any. If it is still tied,
the captains declare a tie and no points are awarded. The next frame starts at the
opposite end of the court with the team that scored the last throwing the pallino.
  4. If a Paddler’s decision is not questioned prior to the toss of the next ball, that
decision is final and may not subsequently be questioned.

  5. The Paddler may not rule if a team has multiple balls inside; that determination is
made by the captains. If multiple points might be awarded to the shooting team,
the captain may request a measurement before the next ball is thrown.
  6. The paddler is responsible for posting the score on the scoreboard.
