The Next Generation of
Hands-On Math

When a publisher and a school district get together to create curriculum something exceptional is bound to happen. The opportunity for Ventura Educational Systems to work with the Kenosha School District in an effort to define and develop exploratory software based on the popular Hands-On Math product line was one of those times.

At a recent meeting at the Kenosha School District offices, the committee prioritized the various modules from Hands-On Math and decided which modules would be developed first. Ventura made a commitment to work closely with the school and to incorporate the ideas of the teachers whenever technically possible.

 Three products were developed:

  • Fraction Sticks
  • Hundreds Chart
  • Computation Algorithms

Dr. Ventura, Software Developer, discusses math content with Diane, Kenosha Math Resource Specialist.

 Fraction Sticks

The Fraction Sticks module allows students to pick up and move an unlimited supply of fraction sticks to investigate fraction concepts, including:

  • comparing fractions
  • equivalent fractions
  • common denominators
  • addition of fractions
  • subtraction of fractions
  • multiplication of fractions
  • division of fractions

 Hundreds Chart

The Hundreds Chart module allows students to mark patterns on a hundreds chart with colorful markers:

  • patterns
  • multiples
  • common multiples
  • primes and composites
  • square and triangular numbers
  • number puzzles
  • sequences

 Computational Algorithms

The Computational Algorithms module focuses on the four operations with multiple digit numbers:

  • Partial Sums Algorithm for Addition
  • Partial Differences Algorithm for Subtraction
  • Partial Products Algoritm for Multiplication
  • Guess and Check Method for Division
Resource Teachers will assume the responsibility of helping other teachers in the district implement the instructional strategies that involve the new technology.
