Challenger is a game and a lesson, all in one. It starts like a combination of
scrabble and chess, with each player placing letters ( notes ) on the board. Players
move these notes around on the board to make musical patterns, scales and chords.
As you get familiar with how to move using musical intervals, you begin to make
better moves. Eventually you get to the point where you're completing several
musical patterns with a single move - then it's time to move on to a more difficult
level. Yes, this game has depth, and can be used to great benefit in music programs
as soon as students are up to the game ( age 10 and up ). The original intent
of the game was to develop the student's grasp of the relationships between musical
devices, in a way that is very useful in preparing for the study of composition
and harmony.
